Twenty years ago, many old books well-known author of the 1700 and 1800 and early 1900 could be purchased for $ 50 – 200. But that's not the case as books by authors such as Charles Dickens, Mark Twain, Stephen Crane and Jack London have soared.
Today, the level of interest in ancient books is high, possibly due to the old road Show. Many people are searching for old books in the attic of his grandparents in property sales and garage sales. Once find the old books they want to know what they are worth.
This may be difficult to put a value on an old book, which is generally defined as a book that is hundred or more years old.
Books of the 1800s and earlier had no jacket. They are usually used and broken and stained. And often they have been repaired. If all pages are intact and the joints and spine are in relatively good condition may be some value in an old book.
However, Many books were reprinted many times, and are relatively abundant and common. You still want to look for the first editions of modern books and hypermodern. And you probably is seeking to obtain the guidance of a bookseller who specializes in old and rare books to learn the tricks and to get an idea of where to find bargains.

Also, if you have enough interest, time and money is not a Rare Book School at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville. It's been there since 1992. It offers five one-day courses on various topics in the rare books and old. There are courses for booksellers, book collectors, librarians, bookbinders and teachers.

Also fonts, Nicholas Basbanes books are excellent for information on rare and collectible books.
My interest in collecting the book goes back some 11 when my brother-in-law began to give me advice. My brother-in-law has a few hundred old books collected mostly in 1980 and 1990 in west coast.
He has demonstrated his books for me from time to time. Most are not very impressive at first glance, until the year they were published, see who was the author and know a little about the substance of the book.
If you have an interest in collecting old books … read about them, do their homework and talk to the experts (like the Antiquarian Booksellers Association of America, ABAA) before making a large purchase.
Bob Morse has been collecting books for 11 years. His website http://www.book-collecting-tips.com contains collecting tips and a list of books he has been collecting recently. Also, each month a collectible Book of the Month book is selected for its appreciation potential.
