Across time and around the world Father Christmas plies his trade of making people happy through the giving of gifts during the Christmas period. Traditionally Father Christmas or Santa Claus or Saint Nicholas or Saint Nick or Santa or Pierre Noel and he has lots more names, is depicted as a kind, portly and happy bespectacled old man dressed in a luxurious deep red coat or suit which itself is richly trimmed in white fur. His face matches this appearance in that he is shown with a jolly smile behind bushy white beard and moustache which match fully his bushy white eyebrows. His eyes, partially hidden behind either round or oblong shaped glasses always have a twinkle and transfix you with an inner happiness.

Throughout the night of Christmas Eve, Santa rides his sleigh, pulled by his flying reindeer led by Rudolph (yes, that’s the one with the red nose), high in the sky going house to house delivering toys to the good children and coal to those that have been bad. In this world of litigation and in a genuine attempt to ensure that adequate quality control processes are in place, Santa allocates toys and coal, coal and toys in accordance with a list. AND for all you people who believe that they have been short changed at Christmas HE checks it twice, so if you still feel like making a case of it, the big guy will win in any court of law! And while we’re at it, if Santa says you were naughty, you were!

Okay, house coming up and Santa is on his sleigh, presents in the sack, child in bed asleep and no door key. No problemo to the big man. See that chimney on the roof; yes the one with the small hole in the top with the smoke coming out of it from the fire burning brightly below? Small chimney, large belly. Large belly, small chimney. Small chimney, hot fire, large belly. Um, could this be a problem? Of course not. This is the world of make believe and this is Santa, better than all of your superheroes put together. This is where Santa’s magic is useful. No-one has ever seen Santa use his magic but no-one doubts he has magical powers otherwise he couldn’t deliver presents around the world in a single night. And yes, these powers extend to creating chimneys where none actually exist otherwise how would children in flats get their presents..?

During the course of the night, Santa and his reindeer need to be fed repeatedly and it is usual for children to leave out a glass of milk and a mince pie for Santa and a carrot to be shared equally by all the reindeer. Somehow life doesn’t always seem fair. This modern trick of leaving a partially drunk glass of Scotch and a half eaten mince pie in a silver case is not on. Santa needs to keep a clear head and he knows better than to drink and drive, besides drinking is bad for his ‘elf.

Santa is entitled to all the help he can get, so all of those other Santa’s are simply there to help the real Santa gather his information – along with raising vast sums of money for charity, watching major sporting events or attending Stag Nights which actually sounds as if it would be quite attractive for the reindeer……
