'Tis the season of Thanksgiving again! As all must be aware of Thanksgiving is a national holiday and a day when family and friends meets and parties in the dishes prepared.
Thanksgiving Day is an important cause for celebration in the U.S. and falls on the fourth Thursday of the year Novemberevery. On this day, Americans give thanks and express gratitude to the Almighty for the good things they have had in the past year. This year, Thanksgiving is celebrated November 27, 2008. Thanksgiving is another name for the Harvest Festival in Britain marking the end of the harvest season there.
Although the exact origin of the tradition is often a subject of debate, many agree that the origins of Thanksgiving can be traced to 17th Century U.S., where the first inhabitants of North America held the first American Thanksgiving in 1621. To show his gratitude to a bountiful crop, settlers Plymouth and met and Wampanoag Indians shared a feast of fall harvest crops in Plymouth. In 1863, during the reign of Abraham Lincoln, the Day of Action Thanksgiving was proclaimed a national holiday and has since been the case.
Today, Thanksgiving is celebrated by preparing sumptuous dinner, saying grace, raising toast, reuniting with family and friends, and exchange of gifts as a token of love and appreciation. Prepared meals include ham, fruit, mashed sweet potatoes, corn, cranberry sauce, pumpkin pie, chicken and eggs, duck, milk, cheese and turkey filled with some of the piece as central. Another popular dish is Thanksgiving turducken, which is again a plate of chicken and turkey stuffed with duck meat and glass with honey, herbs and seasonings.
Some of the gifts exchanged are readymade Thanksgiving or gift baskets and handmade thanksgiving hampers filled with nuts, chocolates, cheese, crackers, jams and other foodstuffs.
